When we moved into this house in January, one of the stipulations of our lease was that we take over care of the female cat, Mama Cat, that lived here. J’s grandfather had basically tamed her down from a feral, and she is the mother of our own kitten, Maya. But she was also completely terrified of anyone but him, and especially hated J’s aunt, (not that I can blame her for that).
They had set up a completely separate food and litter box area for her in the back bedroom, now M’s room. I changed this immediately so that she ate where the other cats ate, which meant she had to come out to the front of the house. It has been a very slow process, and we have tried very hard not to rush her.
We our halfway through our fifth month here, and just a month or so ago, I got to pet her for the first time. She is so starved for affection, she let me lay on floor next to her and pet her all over for ten minutes.
J and I have both been petting her, and the other morning she jumped up on the bed while we were in it. She’s started coming out when strangers are here, and she’ll stay in the room fine even if peopl are moving around. Used to be, any sudden or even not-sudden movement would send her back to M’s room.
Well…tonight, she jumped up on the sofa with me, and laid next to me for two hours, letting me pet her whenever, and actually purring. It was amazing. She is a very sweet cat, and I am glad that she is finally comfortable enough with us to let herself relax.
Also, the picture has nothing to do with Mama Cat, I just thought it was funny.
Also Also, Mama cat really needs a real name, but I just can’t think of anything. Something motherly…
